motherhood is mostly
learning not to reach

a backpack
a taillight
an empty sink
a settled quiet

their shoes disappear
from the doorway

one at work
one driving too fast
one heartbreak-deep
in a bedroom
with the door shut

i stay
where they know to find me
my phone face up
